Product Care

Knitwear

To maintain the appearance of your knits:

  • Instead of hanging your knits, fold them, storing the heavier ones on the bottom and the lighter ones on top.
  • Don't wring your sweaters out after washing. Instead, remove excess water by gently rolling them up along a towel and laying them flat to dry.
  • Do not store knits in plastic bags or containers; trapped moisture leads to mildew. Breathable options like cotton garment bags are preferrable.

Always check the washing instructions before washing. Out of Ireland sells sweaters made from a variety of materials and blends. This means that not all of our sweaters have the same washing guidelines.

Please note, drying your garments with heat can cause shrinkage. Make sure to check drying instructions before attempting.

To prevent pilling:

  • Washing garments inside out prevents their outer face from rubbing against other fabrics or the washing machine drum. (Please note: some of our knits are hand wash or dry clean only)
  • Washing knitwear in a large mesh laundry bag is a great way to protect them from catching on the zippers and buttons of other items.
  • Washing on a delicate or hand-wash cycle with cold water and a wool-specific or mild detergent makes for gentle cleaning.
  • Reshaping and laying sweaters out flat to dry is a better option than the dryer. The intense friction caused by heat and constant tumbling breaks down fibers.

To protect from moths:

  • Although you should avoid over-washing your knits, it is good practice to wash them before storage. Moths are attracted to the scent of skin cells, food, sweat and perfumes.
  • Storing knits in a cedar chest or with cedar rings or blocks repels moths.
  • Strong, natural herbs tend to repel moths. Consider storing sweaters alongside sachets of cedar, lavender, thyme, cloves, or rosemary. Crush the herbs to refresh their scent when necessary.

Leather Bags

To maintain the beauty of your leather bags:

  • Wipe them down with a soft, slightly damp or dry cloth after use to prevent dirt and grime from sinking into the pores.
  • Store your bag loosely with tissue papers that do not have ink on them, rolled up socks or cloth to maintain the shape.
  • Store your bag on a flat surface, rather than hanging it by the handles, which can stretch and wear them over time.
  • Store your bags in breathable, cotton dust bags versus plastic, to avoid suffocating the leather and mold buildup.

Do not use baby wipes, wet wipes or harsh household cleaners on leather, as these strip away the natural oils and will damage your item. The same goes for bleach, ammonia and dish soap, which will cause drying and discolouration.

Wax Jackets

Regular care will extend the life of your waxed cotton garment and ensure it functions well for years to come.

Daily Care – Keep waxed cotton out of the heat as much as possible. Never leave it in a hot car, put it in the dryer or iron the fabric.

Cleaning – Waxed cotton should never be washed with soap or detergent. If your item gets dirty, spot clean it with a cold, damp cloth (or sponge), or hose it off with cold water. For tough grime, you can gently scrub with a soft bristled brush before spot cleaning. Always air dry the item and never store it while damp. Never use a washing machine or dryer to clean your waxed cotton garment. Do not dry clean.

About waxed jackets:

  • Made from densely woven cotton which has been coated with wax to make the cloth waterproof.
  • Waxed cotton is very durable.
  • Epitomize the rugged country wear clothing style which is so popular in Ireland / the UK and the rest of Europe.
  • They age beautifully over time.
